How long does it take to record a song? Being a music production facility (as opposed to the usual bog-standard recording studio) here at Audio Sorcery, we aim to get the best results out of everyone at all times. It is fair to say that a day in the studio equates to one song completed including mixing and mastering. It is possible however over two days to complete three songs. How do you record a band? In essence, we record all instruments seperately one by one in the live room, with the help of guide tracks pre-performed by other band members. So if you where to record a song, this is the "who does what" list... The drummers up first. He gets to set up in the live room and gets to hit the kit while we get the sound up on the desk in the control room. There are about nine mics around the kit depending on the specifics of what needs to be recorded. All the other band members are in the control room. The bass player, guitarist and singer all hook up directly to the desk so that the drummer knows what he is doing through his headphones. These guide tracks performed by the other band members are also recorded. The drummer can do as many takes as he likes until he gets all the bits right, although they don't have to all be right in one take - we can edit sections of each take together seamlessly to get the ultimate drum take. When the drums are complete it's the bass players turn. He sets up in the live room and plays through his amp and records along with the drum take, and the other guide tracks through the headphones. We then repeat this scenario until the guitars, keyboards and vocals have all been captured, perfectly. During all this, the producer/engineer would have already started the mixing on the fully automated mixing desk and so after a few final treaks and play throughs, its time to bounce it down to the mastering machine where the track is completed on to CD. Why not just record everyone playing together? When everyone plays together you inevitably get spill on each microphone - the guitarist comes through the bass track, and the drums come through on the guitar amp etc... This makes mixing a track quite tricky and you'll never get the exact sound that each band member desires. Recording everyone seperately also allows for parts to be edited seamlessly together - so that second verse guitar could be copied to the first verse, or that bass playing through the middle 8 could be copied to the outro and have some effects put on it. None of our many clever production techniques can be performed if there is spill from other instruments on a recorded track. While the CD Mastering process is quite often overlooked in many recording studios throughout the world, Audio Sorcery offers it as an inclusive service when recording music with us. Studios that don't offer a mastering process often let their customers take home a lack lustre or inferior sounding production when compared with music from their favourite CD collection. It is true to say that every commercial music CD you buy has been mastered. So simply put, mastering is a "tidy up" process done to music after it has been recorded and mixed, and before it is produced onto CD. the stages of mastering to CD are;-

in our library, or alternitavely bring your own. We simply set up your
chosen tracks on our recording system and you'll enter our sound recording
room to create your performance. One hour per song is about the norm so in half a day, you could get three to five tracks completed, mixed and mastered on to CD ready for you to take home. Send them to record companies, talent scouts, A&R, auditions, family and friends as presents.... Are you planning on performing with your instrument but require backing tracks? We can create a music track for you to play to. Either original ideas or just a straight forward interpretation of a well know song. We can normally get one or two songs complete in a day, mixed and mastered on to CD. Set up your decks and mixer in the studio. You can perform your one/two hour set while we undertake the recording of it. We can tidy up and edit any glitches you may have done half way through. Even splice in another track or take one away! Once satisfied with your performance the whole session would be mastered on to CD. This would lift the overall volume level of the mix and balance/tighten the sound up. We could put track indents at the specified points that you want them, so you can move to a specific point on the CD like you would normally. We can also convert the entire mix to an MP3.
